The Vault vs. The Pit: Which Underground Car Elevator Is Right for Your Project?

If both solutions serve a very similar purpose, create or give access to an underground parking area, they differ in design, aesthetic, requirements and budget.

If you’re exploring underground parking solutions for your home or development, you’ve likely come across two products in the NELCA Systems lineup: The Vault and The Pit. At first glance, they might seem similar — both use a hydraulic platform to lower a vehicle below grade, both are CSA and CWB certified, and both disappear into your garage floor when not in use.

But the differences between them are meaningful, and choosing the right one comes down to your vehicles, your space, your design expectations, and your budget. Here’s a side-by-side breakdown.

The Concept Behind Each System

The Vault: Fully Custom, Fully Concealed

The Vault is NELCA Systems’ flagship underground car elevator. Every aspect of the system — platform dimensions, travel distance, finish, and configuration — is custom-engineered to your exact project specifications. When the platform is at grade level, the entire structure disappears into the floor. There are no visible columns, no above-grade mechanical elements. The vehicle — and the system beneath it — are completely invisible.

It’s designed for projects where the parking solution needs to match the quality and discretion of the architecture around it.

The Pit: Semi-Custom, Smart Value

The Pit takes a different approach. Inspired by the NS26 above-ground parking lift, it features fixed structural columns that remain visible above grade at all times — whether the platform is raised or lowered. The platform itself lowers into a recessed pit directly beneath your garage, creating concealed underground storage without the full custom engineering of The Vault.

It’s a practical, budget-conscious solution for homeowners who want underground parking without committing to a fully bespoke system.

Key Differences to Consider

Customization and Integration

The Vault is fully custom-made — platform dimensions, travel distance, and configuration are all engineered specifically for your project. This makes it the right choice for new builds and renovations where the parking solution needs to integrate seamlessly with the architecture.

The Pit is semi-custom: platform width can be adjusted between 2.3m and 2.5m, and travel distance ranges from 1.5m to 1.9m. It offers meaningful flexibility, but within a defined range rather than from a blank sheet.

Visual Footprint

This is one of the most significant differences between the two systems. The Vault is fully concealed when the platform is at grade — no columns, no visible structure. It’s designed to be invisible, which is a core part of its appeal for design-conscious homeowners and architects.

The Pit’s structural columns remain above grade at all times. This is a deliberate engineering choice that simplifies the system and reduces cost, but it does mean the lift is always visible in the garage — even when a vehicle isn’t on the platform.

Lifting Capacity and Vehicle Compatibility

The Vault is rated at 4,000 kg (8,800 lbs) with upgrades allowing up to 13,500lb of lifting weight capacity — accommodating virtually any passenger vehicle, including full-size SUVs, large trucks, and high-performance or collector cars.

The Pit is rated at 2,700 kg (6,000 lbs) per platform and is ideally suited for regular sedans and smaller SUVs. If you’re planning to store a larger or heavier vehicle, The Vault is the more appropriate choice.

Platform Material

The Vault’s platform is available in diamond steel sheet or aluminium steel sheet, depending on your specification. The Pit uses galvanized steel plates — a practical, durable material well-suited to its application.

Travel Speed

The Vault travels at 4 metres per minute, providing smooth and controlled movement. The Pit completes a full travel cycle in approximately 55 seconds. Both are practical for daily residential use, though The Vault’s continuous speed specification offers more predictability for double-deck configurations.

Budget

The Pit is explicitly positioned as the more budget-friendly option within the NELCA Systems underground range. Its semi-custom engineering and fixed column design reduce complexity and cost compared to The Vault’s fully bespoke approach. For homeowners who want underground parking functionality without the premium of a fully custom system, The Pit is the practical entry point.
